Focus on Financial Prudence Senator Ernie Lopez

Date: March 17, 2017
News from State Senator
Ernie Lopez
Serving the 6th Senatorial District
Delaware State Senate Republicans March 14, 2017
Dear Friends,
March is here and the brief spring flirtations of warmth from days ago have
Senator Lopez continues to believe that housing people, clothing people and feeding people should be a priority and he showed that commitment by taking time to visit his friend, the Rev. Dale Dunning and her Jusst Sooup Ministry in Cool Spring on a cold Thursday, March 9th. Rev Dale's ministry serves any and all who come to her kitchen each and every Thursday from 11am-2pm.
turned bitter as winter holds on, unable to let go. The cold temperatures and winter storm are fitting, reminding us that the season upon us still has work to do.  In a similar vein, our work in the Delaware State Senate continues, onward and upward, with an unrelenting focus on financial prudence along with substantive and meaningful support for those who serve us daily.
My friends, our state's economic forecast has not improved and while much heavy lifting has been done to chart a steady course, great fiscal challenges still lie ahead as strains in resources and declining revenue, continue to make the budget shortfall even wider.  Many of you have offered thoughtful suggestions while others have voiced opinions publicly.  Towards that end, I was personally moved at the turnout on March 2, at the Lewes Fire Department, as my good friend and colleague, Rep. Steve Smyk and I hosted Governor John Carney for a "budget reset" meeting where over 250 Cape Region residents were in attendance.  As I have said so many times, the selflessness and sincere concern for our state shown by so many in the Cape Region is what makes this area, our home, so unique and so special.
I was in Browseabout Books in Rehoboth this past weekend doing some shopping when a dear friend pulled me aside at the checkout line and made the following statement:  "Ernie, I am a Democrat but I have always voted for you because you work across the aisle and you care about your constituents.  Thank you for co-sponsoring and voting for SB 17 in January. It was an important bill for Delaware."
I thanked my friend for her kind words but had to check my phone and look up the bill to remind myself what it entailed.  Upon reading the synopsis, I recalled the bill from both committee and floor debate.  Quite simply, the bill expanded the organ donor pool in Delaware, a critical need and important step in the right direction for better health options.
I share this story for one reason and it's a reason I will continue to repeat over the course of this legislative session:  even in these divisive times at the national level, please know I will continue to work harder and smarter to find bipartisan solutions to advance our quality of life not just here in the Cape Region but around the state.  As a problem solver, I will continue this pragmatic approach towards governing and ask for your counsel as together we continue down this path towards a healthier and improved well-being for us all.
Thank you for the great honor you give me in serving as your voice and vote in Legislative Hall.
